A Giant Organic Radish & a Bed of Failed Radishes

What a trophy πŸ™‚ I found a giant radish (french breakfast) among the many other radishes that we’ve planted a few weeks ago. This radish did not have any extra space or special treatment and yet it had grown to such a great size. Wondering why other radishes did not achieve this size? What this particular one had in the ground and around that it allowed it to outgrow the many hundreds of other french breakfast radishes?

Not all radishes turned out to be that healthy. Below are photos of one bed of radishes that for some reason did not mature at all. Instead the radishes went into seeds; see the pictures:
